Hillhouse Farm Escapes

Owned by Ruth and Jo Sutherland

We are a very busy sheep farm with 3000 ewes run by the Sutherland family who have farmed here since the 1930s. Father-son team Jim and Dave run the sheep side of things, while Mum, Jo, runs the cottages and as well as a local cafe (over the hill to the north, Soutra). Jim and Dave are passionate about farming in a sustainable way with sheep free to live outside all year round. Even lambing happens outdoors, in early May when the weather is mild.

Hillhouse Farm Escapes

Hillhouse Farm Escapes has three modern-country cottages, converted from former shepherd's houses. Each cottage sleeps at least four guests with potential for more - so come on your own, as a couple, a family or as a larger group. A fourth cottage will be added soon! The cottages are high on the hill looking over Lauderdale in the north Scottish Borders - an easy drive to the sights of Edinburgh and 20-30 minutes from many of the region's most beautiful sights and towns.

The three cottages are House on the Hill, Little House on the Hill (next door) and Berry Hill. They are extremely well appointed with gorgeous interiors, very cosy heating, wifi, well equipped kitchens and excellent hot showers.

Guests are able to make use of our brand new tennis court, and this is a great part of the country for cycling and walking. We are happy to set up first-rate country sports on the hill (simulated and live shoots, clay pigeons, tomahawk throwing, archery etc).

What makes us special

This really is an escape to the hills! Our farm cottages benefit from big skies, fresh air and incredible views. All good for body and soul! The cottages have been renovated with modern country interiors. You can walk right from your door across the farm and into the Lammermuir Hills beyond - there are lots of routes and tracks to explore. We have a brand new tennis court for guest use, with some pretty special views across the Scottish Borders. Come on your own, as a family or as a larger group.
